While we may expect minor hair loss as we age, significant hair thinning can be alarming to seniors. There are many reasons and causes for this hair loss, but the most common culprits are medications, thyroid issues, iron deficiency and diabetes. Fortunately, several at-home remedies may help Temple senior care providers prevent their loved ones from losing hair.
Coconut Oil or Coconut Milk
Coconut oil is very rich in fats and minerals, which both strengthen hair and prevent further hair loss. Coconut oil should be gently warmed, massaged into the scalp and ends of the hair and allowed to sit for approximately one hour. Afterward, wash with mild shampoo and lukewarm water. If coconut milk is used, simply apply it to the areas of the scalp that show signs of thinning. Coconut milk can safely remain in the hair overnight and be washed out the following morning.
Eggs are high in zinc and sulfur, both of which promote hair growth. Add one egg white and a tablespoon of olive oil to a bowl and mix them well. Apply this mixture to your loved one’s scalp and allow it to sit there for about 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and then lightly shampoo your loved one’s hair to remove the mixture.
Jojoba oil has been a trusted home remedy for scalp problems for many years. Because it is antibacterial, it removes germs and residue that may contribute to hair loss. Rub the oil into your loved one’s scalp, paying particular attention to problem areas. Allow the oil to sit for one hour and rinse with cool water. Allow your loved one’s hair to air dry.
Combining crushed rosemary and almond oil creates a fragrant and soothing scalp treatment. Massage the oil into the scalp, cover your loved one’s head snugly with a towel and allow the treatment work for one hour. Afterward, rinse with warm water and follow with a light wash.
