Many seniors have very fond memories of Valentine’s Day from their youth. As a family caregiver, you can help your aging loved one recreate those memories by crafting together this Valentine’s Day. Here are a few craft suggestions you can design with your loved one, brought to you by the Temple, TX, home care experts at Home Care Assistance.
1. Love Bath Bombs
It is easy to help your loved one make love bath balms. Start by combining 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup citric acid, and 1/4 cup of fine Epsom salts, stirring until completely combined and no lumps remain. Slowly add 1/2 a Tablespoon of jojoba oil, 10 drops of essential oil, and 2 drops of food coloring. Add 8 to 10 spritzes of witch hazel until the mixture sticks together when squeezed. Pack into heart-shaped molds and allow it to dry overnight. Wrap the dried mixture in a plastic wrap and give to your family and friends.
2. Valentine’s Day Monsters
If your senior loved one has grandkids around, encourage him or her to make Valentine’s Day monsters for the young ones on this special day. Start with two circles of cardboard with a hole cut in the middle. Holding the two circles together, wrap them with yarn, making sure to cover them fully. Once done, tie the beginning and end points of yarn together, then carefully snip the yarn around the outside edge of the cardboard. To finish the monster, add wiggle eyes and make some antennae with pipe cleaners.
3. Valentine’s Day Wreath
A coffee filter wreath is a beautiful and easy craft for your loved one to make. Start by putting 2 inches of water in a shoebox size tub. Add some red paint and lay about 10 coffee filters in the tub, then let them soak for a few minutes. Remove them and squeeze out as much water as possible with paper towels, keeping the coffee filters flat. Lay the coffee filters on a parchment. Bake them for 30 minutes at 350 degrees until they are dry. Take 2 filters and put a dot of glue in the middle so they will stick together. Cut the filter into a circular strip that is about ¼ inches wide, then roll the strip up so it looks like a flower. Next, hot glue the flower to your wreath form.
